Mire

History & Process

These works were created in a state severely affected by the highs and lows of bipolar disorder before receiving effective treatment, they are products of a chaotic mind exploring digital visual tools with no other goal than the escape that was a part of the process. Most of the works were created in 2013 in one particular period of illness. Reflecting on them now (8 years later) gives me relief knowing that I no longer live in this mire-like mental state. Every piece in this collection used to be symbolic of pain and disease, but have over time grown into symbols of hope as my own health have improved greatly.

A fundamental part of the process in all of my work, and especially in this series is experimentation. None of the pieces were ever conceptually or visually planned. They are results of exploring functions of various 3D and 2D visual software with great imprecision and with a lack interest in understanding the tools, but with an intense focus on finding ways for those tools to surprise me with their output.

Most of the pieces are based on 3D software, but digital paintings are also included.
